Nepal and Tibet

Travel time: June 2002  |  by Denise Sullivan

Back to Nepal

We cannot leave quickly enough in the morning. It is so good to be back on the road. Almost immediately, once out of the town, the countryside changes. We are now totally on the southern side of the range and we begin to see waterfalls by the dozens and the lush vegetation of alpine rainforest. We are amazed that only minutes ago we were in a town that was heartbreaking and now we are surrounded by scenery that is breathtaking. Beautiful trees that we often see in pride of place in our prize gardens at home are growing wild. We are amazed at the blue conifers on which are growing pretty blue cones. In spring, we are told that the mountainsides are a mass of flowering rhododendrons. There are so many waterfalls that we do not know where to look first. They seem to fall out of the sky. Sometimes we actually drive under them. Sometimes they tumble across the road in a rushing stream. No wonder they often have landslides and road slips. The road twists and turns, twists and turns and we descend from the Tibetan Plateau quickly. Down and down we go with picture book scenery all the way.
