Cologne, Germany:
"We are in Cologne! Already, being in Germany (any part) has already been a much better decision than being anywhere in Budapest. Maybe we didn't give it a fair chance or whatever, but I just know right off whether I like something or not-- and, being in Budapest for 4 days would've been HELL.
After our (miserable) night train with seats so uncomfortable that at one point, 'high school boy' crawled underneath them for a proper rest (lol), followed by Adam, while I invaded 3 seats and laid down with a blanket, read Jane Eyre til 2am before finally falling asleep."
Adam sports the Kramer 'do
After arriving into the city, and luckily, there were available rooms at the hostel, we brought our stuff upstairs, put on some clean shirts, showered, then got ready to have lunch. Great China looked really good so Adam and I each had a huge plate of their fried rice with chili garlic, and I, some wonton soup. It truly hit the spot!
After a hearty lunch, we went to the Dom Cathedral--hiked the 502 ft up to the tower (a 30 minute walk straight up the narrow stairs to the top!) and enjoyed the lovely, albeit, scary view of Cologne city.
Then, descending down 300 something odd steps, we walked around the main square to 4711 (see below for history)
Our rickety bunk beds and smelly room
Our fave lunch spot for the next several days
"Fried noodle with different flesh and vegetables"-- Appetizing!
Crack kills!
Our favorite lunch time meal for the next couple of days
The Creepy Doll
We love the Crypts!
Cryptkeeper-in-training
Tales from the Crypt...
The Archbishops of Cologne-- see, I can read German!
Back upstairs to the church...
It's tower time!
At the start of the stairs...
1/4 of the way up...
It's a good think I work out on the stairmaster!
The bell rings....
...and back up the stairs some more...
Adam rounds the corner...
...then another corner...
Up the bell tower to the top, by far the scariest climb up!
Trying not to look down below
FINALLY, we are at the top!
Beautiful Cologne!
Am I cool or what?
After the church, it's back to exploring the outside.
Ahhh, the life in the times before bills!
Deliciously nutritious
People don't really seem to mind the yellowjackets over the pastries!
Look at how much these ones ate away
A very annoying thing...
Bathroom attendants that charge tourists to use the restrooms, even when we are PAYING CUSTOMERS.
Me: Why do you charge customers to use the restroom?
Him: Hey...where are you from?
At Forty-seven Eleven house
"At the beginning of the 18th century, Italian expatriate Johann Maria Farina (1685-1766) created a new fragrance and named it Eau de Cologne (Water from Cologne), after his new residence, Cologne. In the course of the 18th century the fragrance became increasingly popular. Eventually, Cologne merchant Wilhelm Mülhens secured the rights to the name Farina from a Farina with no connection to the Farina family who produced the original Eau de Cologne. However, Mülhens needed the name Farina in order to market his version of the fragrance successfully, and, because of the success of Farina's original Eau de Cologne, the name Farina had become inseparable with the fragrance. Under contract, Mülhens opened a small factory at Cologne's Klöckergasse and began manufacturing his own version of the fragrance. In later years, and under pressure from court battles with the Farinas who produced the original Eau de Cologne, his grandson Ferdinand Mülhens chose a new name for the firm and their product. He chose the number 4711, a number that the city of Cologne had assigned to Wilhelm Mülhens' future residence on the eve of the French Revolution.
In 1994, the Mülhens family sold their company to German Wella corporation. Today, original Eau de Cologne (German: Kölnisch Wasser) still is produced in Cologne by both the Farina family (Farina gegenüber since 1709), currently in the eighth generation, and by Mäurer & Wirtz, who took over from Procter & Gamble (who had in turn acquired Wella in 2003) in 2006."
What started as me making fun of this perfume's name eventually led me to buying it because it smelled nice
The 4711 perfume fountain gave me a headache!
Nauseating
This is probably the coolest decor on a store I've ever seen
Yes, groan... lol
Would you eat this candied pig?
or these silver jelly beans?
The worst trend since Hammer-pants and Cross Colours!
Big pimpin'
Alright, I got the lowdown w/ the translation on this (see below)
"Piss, sh*t, vomit, trash, debris, cigarette butts, noise, glass shards! We spend 15,000 euros of private funds to keep our place clean and our flowerbeds fresh. WE CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE! <An arrow depicting Urinal 30 meters away>"
The beautiful property the residents are trying to keep clean
Finally, we get some grub at Päffgen- Das Brauhaus!
Päffgen Kölsch is delicious!
The rule of the house: non-stop beer is filled into your glass until you cover it with a coaster!
Sitting in the biergarten
Roast pork, potatoes and sauerkrat!
I couldn't touch pork again after this meal
After a nice meal, an evening stroll and playing hypothetical games of "Would you rather sleep with <insert hideous person here> or 3-way a cat and dog?" (to which Adam said 'the cat and dog' lol), we arrived back at the hostel for some shut-eye.
Food coma sets in
