Bolivia 2008

La Paz - Nov 14-15

La Paz lies on elevations between 2900 and 4000 meters, while the wealthier people generally live in the lower parts (more oxygene).

The first difference from other cities which you will note in La Paz is that there are no supermarkets (well, to be precise, there exists ONE). Almost everything is sold directly on the street: meat, clothes, computer accessories, all being sold side by side. See the photo below for some very special articles offered as well.

Traffic in La Paz is insane. A huge traffic congestion covers the whole city, no matter which time of the day. There is no subway and walking is a real alternative, but on the main roads the side walks hardly have space for all pedestrians.

More images and descriptions will follow in one week, when I pass through La Paz again. Tonight I will continue to Potosi, which is 9-10 hours by bus (it required quite some efforts to find a bus company which has a loo in the bus).

This shop sells dead lama fetuses and dried frogs (both are used for religious Aymara ceremonies). Making somebody the present of a dead lama fetus is considered a very precious gift and expression of high respect.
