At noon I arrived in Tacna. After changing some money I looked around in this small town, visited the Eiffel Church and went to the museum in the train station. In the train museum are many old vehicles, an old workshop and a lot of scrap, very funny to see.
I did not want to spend the night in Tacna. So I decided to walk to the bus terminal. My plan was to catch a night bus to Cusco but all buses to Cusco had been booked up for this day. So my next plan was to catch a bus direction Cusco and I found a bus to Arequipa, also an interesting city. A little bit time for a surprice meal (only a spanish menu) was left until my bus started. On the evening I arrived in Arequipa. On the bus I met Grace from Ireland. We decided to search a hostel together. This was a good choice to save taxi costs. The friendly taxi driver drove us to a very cheap, nice hotel. On the evening I visited the inner city a little bit on my own because Grace was very tired.
Day 68 - June 10
Today I found out that Arequipa is a really nice city. The first adventure was to explain in an internet cafe that my camera is full and that I need to burn my pictures on a CD. The first try on this virus computer got something like an AOL-CD as coffee cup reductor. The second try worked
The whole day I walked around with Grace. Later on a marked a surprice meal (only spanish menu again), it was something like raw fish, I better have not eaten it.
We also booked a tour to Canon de la Colca. I wanted to drive on to Cusco, but Arequipa was great and Grace wanted to visit this Canyon and drive on to Cusco afterwards.
On the evening we went to a pub to drink Pisco sour. Grace has been to Chile before without tasting Pisco, the national drink of Chile and Peru.
Then we visited a mass service in the Cathedral, built in an extreme barock style.
Later we tried Peru libre, a cocktail with Pisco and Coke. I like Pisco sour more, Grace likes Peru libre more.
Day 69 - June 11
Today our tour to Canon de la Colca started. This day was not to go into this Canyon. We did a bus trip to Chivay, a town before with a lot of scenic stops. The road was in a really bad condition. During the way we had an altetude of 4910m and one girl felt very bad. The driver gave her oxygen from a bottle to make her feel better.
At the afternoon we arrived in Chivay and it was time to take a bath in a thermal pool.
On the evening we had a completely organized entertainment program in a restaurant with supper, music and dance. I was not so impressed because it was too touristically and very artificul.
Day 70 - June 12
At 5am we had to get up but this was great to have a long day with a lot of sights. Then we drove to the Canyon. We visited Condors sailing up in the morning sun. They are living in the valley and during the day they go up to find food in the mountains. They weight up to 12 kilogramm and so they need lift wind to go up the long way from the valley.
Then we drove on in the canyon and made a lot of stops. The valley and the Canyon was really interesting to see. For lunch we drove back to Chivay where I have eaten Alpaca(Lama) and drunken Inka Kola, a very sweet lemonade.
On our way back to Arequipa the bus driver played an Audio-CD as long as an MP3-CD with his cheap CD-Player on this bad road.
Back in Arequipa a little bit time for supper and internetcafe was left until the bus to Cusco started. I went to Cusco together with Grace.
