Hi Jeorg
I enjoyed your travelogue immensely and put the link to my latest trip across Queen Charlotte Sound in the "Homepage" text box. Well, it won't accept it for some reason. I'm so lucky all I have to do is drive for a few minutes to get to the water, but I'm sure there are good places to kayak around Germany too.
Regards, Tom H.

Hi Joerg. I tried to email you, but your address knorr61@web.de was not working - the email bounced back. Anyway, in answer to your question: Probably the best guide to the Queen Charlottes is by Neil Frazer called Boat Camping Haida Gwaii, published 2001 by Harbour Publishing. His research was by outboard, but most info applies to paddlers. I had this email from a friend about the Charlottes:

"Graham Island appears typical west coast with lots of good beaches, quite a few places to land and generally some place to run for cover if things deteriorate quickly. I have spoken with Don Cohen who teaches at Malaspina and has paddled the west coast of Graham about 8 times and he says it is about as good as it gets if you like the west coast. The west coast of Moresby Island is something else. So far as I can tell it is the toughest place to paddle on the coast. Cohen told me that he has paddled in many parts of the BC coast, the Arctic, Alaska etc and none of them compare to West Moresby. If I try it I wouldn't be able to take much of my crew as we have a 15 knot tolerance range that we try and stay within."

Good luck with your trip to the Charlottes! It sounds wonderful.

Cheers, John Kimantas

Hey Joerg!
This trip really sounds wonderful, British Columbia is a wonderful place to visit, I love the wilderness there. I hope I'll be able to do a similar trip once.

Joerg, great to read this and see the pictures. Brings back so many memories of my own circumnavigation. Envious of your whale close encounters and all your good weather. Next time read those chart notes BEFORE you go around the point.

Nice Journal - Vancouver Island is truly a great place to paddle - We did just 250 kms of it this summer from Quatsino to Nootka sound.

A truly inspiring report of a fantastic trip. Well done. And thanks to your son for an excellent translation. I plan to do this trip with a friend in the summer of 2008 and am now doubly determined to pull it off. Thanks and congratulations again.

Nice to read about your trip around Vancouver Island, maybe next time you come to British Columbia to kayak you will let me show you how to read current tables before you paddle through the rapids.
