ARGENTINA #1: Iguazu Falls-Argentinan Side

Puerto Iguazu (Argentina)

After putting together a rough plan of what we wanted to do over the coming weeks we bought bus tickets to take us North to the Iguazu waterfalls and then on to Rio and back. The distances here in Argentina are big and they have the busses for the job! On the overnight journey from Buenos Aires to Puerto Iguazu (18hr trip) you are offered scotch on the rocks before you are served dinner with your choice of wine or beer then as you enjoy dessert you are served sparkling wine before you recline fully in your massive comfy arm chair and watch a few movies. Its like airline business class travel for about 1/1000 of the price!

The Iguazu falls actually sit on the border between Brazil and Argentina and are just a stones throw away from Paraguay. We decided that we would visit Puerto Iguazu (Argentina) on the way to Rio and Foz do Iguazu (Brazil) on the way nack from Rio. We arrived at Puerto Iguazu at about midday and headed off immediately by bus to the National Park to get our first glimpse of the falls. WOW! That is a lot of water! We saw loads of waterfalls in Australia but of course nothing on this scale...it´s pretty powerful stuff. The falls are in fact over 270 individual cascades spanning a horseshoe shaped 70m high rock formation for some 3km seprated in sections by islands of rock. The water flow was not at its max when we were there so I can´t even imagine how it looks in full flow. The Argentinian side of the allows you to get close to the water with lots of wooden walkways and view points. Its really nicely done.
