Round the world in 90 days!

Travel time: December 2006 - March 2007  |  by Carolina Martinez

Rio de Janeiro

When my baby, when my baby smiles at me I go to Rio de Janeiro . . . I´m a funny fellow . . . da dadadadada da dadaadadadaaaa . . .

We met Jo and Bob again at Santiago Airport and exchanged stories while on our way to The Marvellous City. We had rented a 3 bedroom apartment in Copacabana right on the border of Ipanema - how many cheesy songs can you cram into ten days?

We pretty much spent most of our days swimming at the beach and many of our nights drinking at the kiosks on the beach. After all, it is Rio.

So if you wanted to know whether or not Brazillian girls really wear those bikinis . . . just scroll down and try singing:

Tall and tan and young and lovely, the girl from Ipanema goes walking and . . .

We took a little day trip to the arty area of Santa Teresa. We had to get on most rickety tram I´ve ever seen which took us through a really lovely old neighbourhood. I was on the hunt for the yellow stairs that were in the film clip BEAUTIFUL. We didn´t end up finding them but did take a slightly dangerous wonder through an area we later found out was surrounded by some 45 favelas. Ummm, woops!

We met a funny young fellow by the name of Wellington who had his eye on Kelli. We had fun trying to communicate to a portuguese speaker in spanish and english - we got most of it across.

You want for nothing on the beach. Everything is sold by beach vendors including cigarettes, food, cocktails, dresses, swimmers, sunnies, umbrellas - everything!

Yummy cheesy sticks that they cook on the beach for you (kind of tastes like haloumi)
