I survived Rio and was not robbed like everybody said. It's safe as long as you follow rules that are valid everywhere. Of course there are pickpockets and boys who try to steal at the beach, but they are everywhere. Mallorca, Thailand or Friedrichshafen.
It was harder to survive the New Party at the Copacabana. 1000 of people, Samba everywhere, food and drinks at the beach. People dance and celebrate til the morning.
I was there only for 6 days, so I can't say much, but it's great to relax at the Copacabana and Ipanema (and doing the favourite sport here, butt watching 
if you know what I mean ) and party at one of the night clubs. There is probably more to do and see so it's worth to come again.
