Kelli and I went on a search for beach life. We had heard a lot about Punta del Este but also told that it was quite expensive. We decided to go to Piriapolis which is the point where the Mar del Plata (river water) meets the Atlantic Ocean.
Piríapolis was a bit weird. During the summer holidays it is over-run with Uruguayan and Argentine families but when we were there it was just dead. It felt a bit like a David Lynch film.
On our balcony (sorry about the knickers)
Anyone who has ever been to South America will know what a chore it is trying to avoid ham, cheese and meat. I would never have thought that you could have 12 version of ham and cheese on one menu but those Latinos seem to manage it! Anyways some places it is worse than others and in Piríapolis, it was very, very bad.
I´m not sure what is more disgusting, the potato balls, the chicken with ham and cheese on top of it or the whatever that is hanging off Curly´s fork. GROSS!
Since Piríapolis was a bit weird and the water still looked a little to river-ish for us, we hired a moped and went for a reccy up to Punta del Este. It was a pretty incredible ride as there is literally kilometers and kilometers of beach. Punta del Este has 50km of beach on one side of the peninsular and 50km on the other.
Yeah, we´re cool.
Some of the strange architecture along the coast
awwwww
Punta del Este was also dead. During the summer it is like the Ibiza of South America but there was nobody around so we were able to negotiate a good price for a hotel in a usually pricey and very trendy area. Almost all the restaurants were shut but one we found open served us the best food we had had in all South America.
No photos of the food this time
Ummmmm, things got messy on the way home. I knew we shouldn´t have had the Daiquiri!
In reality we were a little unlucky with the weather so we didn´t get much swimming done but we hired bicycles and explored the coast a little.
See how the water is really brown where it crashes and behind that it is really blue? When you swim in it it doesn´t taste salty either. Really weird.
Us eating the ¨best chivito in town¨ at Rex´s. A chivito is a steak sandwich. They are very yummy!
View from Rex´s
On a night out in Punta del Este we met the newly crowned Miss Uruguay. She had literally been crowned about 1 hour before she waltzed past the trashy bar we were drinking at.
How do I manage to take the worst photo of my life next to Miss Uruguay?
How freaky does Miss Uruguay look?
