Stranded across the Rohtang

Travel time: October 1995  |  by Roshni P.

On a recce trip to the newly opened Spiti valley, I learned why mountains are nobody's friends!
From there on, no matter where I go, I am always prepared for the worst!

Introduction

The character in this story:
Capt. Zadu (a Manali based agent),
Sweety Bhai (partner of Capt. Zadu)
Pradeep (our driver)
Pradhan: my father
and I, a budding entrepreneur – a future business tycoon (ever wondered how our perspective of achievement and success changes as we grow older?)

It was October 1995. We were closing our camp in Kullu Valley. For future business, Capt, Zadu suggested going on a recce trip to the newly opened Spiti valley. Those days, I was not in to reading a guidebook beforehand. I would collect information when I was there.... so I had NO idea where I was going etc.

It was pretty hot and since we were driving, we decided to take a regular bedding with bed sheets, blanket etc. I had a jacket and PT shoes (those thin canvas shoes). Everybody else was dressed in a similar fashion with no extra jackets or anything else, just a normal hiking shoe and a light jacket.

We also carried a tent to test it in the local conditions
