Marc & Nora ROUND THE WORLD 2005/2006 - Join us!

Travel time: September 2005 - July 2006  |  by marc and nora L.

Australia - Down under: Port Gregory, Pinnacles, Yanchep NP

Exmouth and Karijini Nationalpark was the most northern we should get in Western Australia. Originally we had planned to visit Broome as well but due to the fact that the wet season had already arrived we decided not to take the risk to be stuck for weeks in case flooding occurs. (we read things like a 2 meter wide stream could easily become a 15 meter wide river during wet season)

furthermore the deadly box jellyfish inhabit the coast around broome during the wet season, so you may understand that we werent really keen to bake in 40`C + without being able to enter the water.

The approx.1000kms drive from Karijini to Perth can be simply described as VERY VERY hot! our highlight was to stop in Newman, go to Woolworths (Supermarket), go straight to the Frozen Food Aisle, open the freezers and squeezing our bodies in to cool down!

In Port Gregory we had a 1 Night stop to see the Pink Lake. Port Gergory was founded to exploit the lead and copper deposits discovered in 1848. The colour of the lake is due to beta carotine found in the lake.

We were parked at the car park at Port Gregory when another backpacker van pulled up next to us and one guy waved to us. it was flo, a german guy who travelled with the bunch of people we met in coral bay. australia is so small....

...and the best thing was that wilelm, the dutch guy, was fortunate with fishing! he caught 2 sharks within a few minutes. so we were invited for dinner: COCONUT RISOTTO WITH FRESH SHARK - yummy!

On the way down to Perth we took the Greater Northern Highway and decided to sleep at a free rest area. Unfortunately there was not such a thing as a free campsite. All we could do is to park up right next to the highway. Our night sleep lasted for approx. 20 minutes as every road train passing by shook the entire van and made us think the end of the world has come.

We arrived at the Pinnacles in late afternoon and stayed to see the sunset. It is an amazing and mystical site - especially when the sun plays its game with the sand and stone formations.
