My trip around the world... India

Travel time: July 2004 - December 2007  |  by Nicole Schemionek

17.11.04 Varkala

The next day we searched for something better and found a great room in the back of the beachside. It is hidden and surrounded by palm trees. It is cool all day. It has a nice bed with soft mattresses and soft pillows... the softest ones I ve had in India... so I am in heaven again... the room is spacious and we have a mosquito net and a van and loads of windows. Still it is quite dark inside cos the windows are colored. We pay 150 rps for this room which is very cheap. We found some nice places to eat and the food is great as well. The beach is not far away and it is not crowded but nice and windy... the water has a good temperature and the sun is shining almost every day. The water is quite rough so. Varkala is known as one of the dangerous beaches in India. They know what they are talking about. I was swimming yesterday and the current was really strong. I was drifting away like nothing. 50 m left in no time. I tried to get back to the beach but the waves were too strong and too high. I couldn't stand anymore and got dragged outside to the sea. The lifeguards were whistling and waved with their arms to let me know that I should come out... nice one... I didn't even know how to keep my head out of the water. Finally I was jumping into the waves and hoped that they would bring me closer to the beach again. I swallowed I think about a liter of salty water. I felt awful... I am a good swimmer and a strong swimmer but this never occurred to me. There was only fear that I wouldn't make it... I was really afraid... In the end I was struggling, trying to swim and move and breathe... but I made it. I went out of the water,... really exhausted and went back to my sarong... I laid down and didn't go into the water again... it was just too much...
One day we've been to kovalam. There is another beach which should have been nice. So we wanted to take a look and see what it was about. We thought about moving there but we wanted to check it out first. It was a mess. We went to trivandrum and then to kovalam. The beach is quite dirty and there are loads of fishermen and boats and the beach is not really as clean as the one in varkala. We went shopping so... I got me a nice bag and a dress which was made for me in an hour... for only 300 rps... I am very glad with it. It is orange and now I am so tainted, I think it doesn't look wrong... so finally we decided to stay over here at varkala beach until the 14 th of December... really holiday... 12 o'clock getting up, breakfast, beach, reading, swimming, 19 dinner and maybe a drink... and around 22 o'clock back to bed,... reading and sleeping... so that's a lazy life... but it is great... I really like it and so I also get the chance to keep up my diary... and to save money. At the time I am living on 250 rps a day which is 5 euro... and I have a great time and get brown...

Ok... enough of that... hope you are all doing well...

ps. since I am only surviving by pizza, pasta and tomato soup, I didn't suffer from any sickness around my stomach... So I will just keep it that way... haven't been sick since the Jogg falls...
