My trip around the world... India

26.12. Tsunami in South Thailand

The 26th of december the catastrophe with the tsunami happened. Chris and me went out the evening before to celebrate my birthday. we came back to our bungalow and went to sleep. the next morning we were supposed to go by the ferry back to krabi because we wanted to visit the other little islands around krabi. we were so lucky... we still don't have words for it. the 26th in the morning we got up, packed our stuff to leave and we went outside the bungalow and the people were running away from the beach side. we didn't know what happened and were going to ask somebody. they told us that there was an earthquake under the sea and that there was a tidalwave which destroyed the whole beachside. we saw the last wave coming in and we were ready to run. but happily it didn't come so far. so there we stood, with our tickets for the ferry and no way to go anywhere. we were sitting the whole day in the restaurant which belonged to our bungalow and we were watching tv. there were rumors about another wave and the water was coming and going. Later I walked along the beach. there was so much destroyed. a day before a tailor shop opened and they brought a new couch in and some dolls for the clothes... everything was laying outside totally destroyed, people were sitting next to their shops, crying. they had to pay rent for the land for one year and started a business... now was just the beginning of the season and most of the people are broke. it was really sad to see and a weird feeling that we still had all our stuff. I was walking to the place where we stayed first. it was a little bungalow near the beachside behind some rocks. I tried to find our old bungalow, but it wasn't there anymore. everything was laying around and there was nothing left from our first house. that was really depressing,... because normally we would have slept there when the wave came in. so another time that I felt relly lucky... The restaurant was always full with people which were watching the news. Chris and me built up the pc's again so that they could check their mails... We were sleeping outside in the restaurant, ready to run if there was coming another wave. the next day we rented a motorbike and we drove around the island. it didn't get so much destroyed like phuket for example but still some people lost everything. we met some other people which were diving this day. most of them were happily healthy and just had some injuries on the legs. There were still divers missing and in Saladan 4 people died... we were driving along the beachside and were ready to help if there was something to do. In the evening we came back to our restaurant. we as well wanted to leave the island and go somewhere else. We asked the owner if it was possible to change our tickets. he said that there was no ferry yet to the mainland,... and that the public transport was not reliable. ok... we asked for a private bus which should cost about 200 baht normally. now they wanted to have 2000 baht per person to come to krabi... that was too much. I mean, we are longer in thailand and we didn't have to catch a flight or something. so in the end we just decided to hitchhike...
